Home School Music Program

Dear Families:
I want to let you know how excited we are about starting our Home school music program for the second year. I think the first year went well, but there was so much more that we thought could be done. There was a lot of trial and error and many successes. There were also aspects of the program that could have been better.
The curriculum for the second year program is thorough, well thought out, and specifically designed to result in academic and musical excellence. Key aspects from each course are intricately and purposefully interwoven with others. This is not only important for you and your children, but is an integral aspect of where the Academy is going long term. We have a track record so far of very successful results from our private lessons and extra curricular activities. This includes frequency in getting students into all county, tri-county, all state, and college. It is paramount to me that our home school program joins that list and that the students succeed.
As you know, home schooling poses unique benefits and challenges for which our customized programs are perfect. Individual attention, and no limits as far was what a student is able to try and reach for excites me greatly.
You will notice a few changes to the structure of the classes, course descriptions, and times. You will also notice very specific and explicit structure as far as policy, billing, credits, and course dates. These changes were made with the goal accommodating as many of our families as possible. Ensembles will be larger and mixed with students from private and public schools. Students will have more social opportunities and have access to individuals from our teaching staff who were previously unavailable due to time constraints.
In short, I believe in home schooling. It really gives all of us the freedom to educate children based on high expectations and an overarching love of learning. I am also confident in what we are capable of as teachers and as an educational institute. I am looking forward to putting this curriculum to work. I know you will be pleased with the results this December. Attached are course descriptions, dates, rates, and policies. The curriculum will be forwarded upon your enrollment so that you can prepare, follow along, and submit for accreditation as necessary. General Music-The fall 2009 Semester of General Music will focus on two goals. The theme will be Music in Culture. Music in culture explores the impact and incorporation of music in different societies around the world. This will include exploration of different cultures, economies, instruments, and religions. General Music will also continue to emphasize drills and exercises that continue the students practice and application of reading lead sheet notation, rhythms, form, accent markings, symbols, and general music theory.
US History and American Government-
This course will continue to focus on close reading and research as a means of analyzing history by separating fact from heritage. Critical thinking and group discussion will accompany lectures and projects. Students will explore Student Cam 2010 and other civic projects. The first semester will focus on the time period from the American Revolution to the Decade before the US Civil War.

Band Ensemble- Students will benefit from group play that uses scales and rhythm exercises to bring cohesion to the group and teach musicianship. Repertoire will be selected by the instructor based on the variety of instruments in the ensemble. Daily practice will be encouraged and required. The 13-week course will culminate in a live performance on or around the Christmas holiday.

Guitar and Pop Orchestra – The guitar and pop orchestra focuses on learning to play as a group with contemporary repertoire and modern instrumentation. The form of most songs will be (Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus, Outro), The ensemble will study and perform songs from several genres such as Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Country, and Folk. Students will learn to read music in several forms, lead sheet, tablature, chord charts, lyric sheets, and lead sheets. Music theory will be incorporated as needed and focus on key structure chord construction and scale derivation. The 13-week course will end with a live performance on or around the Christmas Holiday.

Calvert County Youth Orchestra-The CCYO is a prep orchestra designed to prepare students for auditions for reputable community orchestras. Repertoire is determined by progress and the student’s ability to practice, retain, and recite various scales. Sight-reading is essential and a simple audition is required to participate. The CCYO performs as determined by the director at various times throughout the year.

Payment Options
Payments by semester-Paying the total amount in full and up front
Two payments per semester-the total amount due is split into two equal payments, the first one due at the time of enrollment.
Payments by the month-The total balance is divided by three and payment collected the first week of each new month with the first payment being collected at the time of enrollment. Payment is due before the start of class for any given month. There is a late fee of ten dollars per week for any payment six days late, then twelve, and so on. If no payment has been made by the approach of the third week, the student will not be permitted to return to class until payment is made.
There is a 10% off of total tuition discount for families signing up two or more students
There is a 15% off of total tuition discount for families signing up three or more students
There is a 20% off of total tuition discount for families signing up four or more students
Credits and Refunds
A credit is considered the weekly amount of your courses divided from the 13-week tuition total.
Credits cannot be transferred to private lessons nor can credits for private lessons be transferred to tuition.
Credits are moved forward into the new semester when a scheduled class does not take place due to the Academy canceling
Credits are not forwarded when a student misses a class for any reason accept sickness as demonstrated by documentation from a doctor.
Refunds are not issued once tuition payments have been made. If a student drops a course a refund will be granted from the next upcoming month forward. (If a student signs up and pays tuition in September, and then again in October and drops out in the second week of October, credit will not be granted for the remainder of that month.
Refunds are not given for materials, books, or accessories.
Refunds will be given but not prorated if a student is asked to leave the program. A student may be asked to leave the program for not practicing. A student will never be asked to leave if they are simply challenged by work and need individual attention. However, to the extent that an entire group is being held up by lack of practice or constant and unchanging disruption, this option may be explored.
Educational policies and Student Expectations
Practice Policy-Students are expected to practice outside of our weekly sessions to the extent needed to participate in ensembles so as not to hold back the progress of the group. The amount of necessary practice can be determined on a case-by-case basis. This will allow the teacher, student, and parent to have input with respect to the students other activities and academic responsibilities.
Communication with Parents will increase in frequency and we will be asking for parent’s participation in making sure that assignments are completed and practice is accomplished. This communication will also give parents an opportunity to have a direct line with the teachers. We will be using email and yahoogroups to communicate about courses, course work, and upcoming events.
Private Lessons-It is mandatory that each student be taking private lessons at the Academy in addition to this program. Scheduling and frequency are flexible. This will ensure that progress can be made during class time and that individual attention can be appropriately given to students needing assistance.
