my JOURNEY | krista garrett
I studied music early in life and it was difficult. I had to practice more than the other students and felt inadequate because of talent comparisons I would put myself through with peers and those evaluations I was subjected to by teachers. I was fortunate to go to an arts high school but the rigorous of comparison tore at my self-esteem and I left music behind. With no funds for college, I started working a secretarial job to make money to attend the local community college.
As I earned my degree in psychology, I found myself drawn to music. I would periodically work on compositions as the inspiration would strike me, but nothing serious. I would later continue my education to complete my Master’s Degree in Developmental Psychology and incorporated music in my therapeutic interventions with children and adults. I was fascinated with the relationship music had with brain development/injury and development & recovery.
I found myself teaching Psychology at the local community college for extra money and I would later meet a talented guitarist that had just started a music academy in our county.
To hear him talk about his work and his students, it renewed my passion for music on another level. I decided to join him at the Academy and I eventually took ownership of the Academy. Garrett has overcome many obstacles over the years; a potential business partner and full-time teacher (and best friend) died just as we were finalizing our partnership, the lease to a new and larger space was abruptly terminated and a fire in our business complex destroyed 50% of my classrooms, equipment, and inventory.
Garrett Music Academy is the little engine that could and as a result, my mission is to serve all the “fighters” that have a desire to play music, regardless of their age, circumstances or ability. Our doors are open to all!
